Prevention is the key to a clean and clear pond. Debris falling into your pond such as leaves, sticks, trash and more can cause your pond's water to become unsightly as well as provide algae with a great environment to grow. Although pond skimmers will help with a lot of the debris that goes into your pond, it will only get the things that are floating on the surface. This is where you will need to help your pond skimmer out and use a debris net to scoop out the submersed debris or use a pond vacuum to suck all of the debris & muck from the bottom. In the fall you can used a pond net to cover your pond. This will prevent leaves from falling into your pond and aleviate much of the work of cleaning out debris. Air pumps will prevent the surface of your pond from freezing over which will prevent toxins from building in your ponds water, possibly killing your fish. Air pumps also aerate the water and give your pond good oxygen levels. The more you do to prevent debris from falling into your pond the cleaner and healthier it will be.
