Ah, yes, the dog days of Summer have arrived. We are sweltering in the hu-midity here in Central Oklahoma and I’m sure there are those who were whining about all the rain in May and June who are wishing for some of it now.
Pond wise, the biggest problem from the heat is hot water. Our ponds are running about 90+ degrees during the heat of the day. Our mornings are in the low 70’s and afternoons in the low to mid 90’s so the ponds aren’t changing much from morning to night. Any shade you can provide your pond will be appreciated by the fish who are stressed right now due to lack of oxygen. Remember, your pond is depleted of oxygen in the early hours of the day because the plants are using ox-ygen at night and replenished later in the day as the plants release oxygen all day long. Algae does the same thing.
Many of you have taken advantage of our Big Bargain Base-ment Blowout sale this past week. We’re going to continue it for at least another week for those of you who didn’t see the Facebook post or receive an email about it. Some really great buys out there. Some dented, some dinged and some that were returned for various rea-sons but all functional and special pricing on it all.
A lot of your ponds are experiencing algae blooms due to this hot weather we’re having. If you use an algaecide, please wait at least 5 days between treatments otherwise you may remove too much algae and that takes too much oxygen from the pond and your fish will suffer. We’ve already had a customer come in who treated with too much algaecide and all the fish expired from lack of ox-ygen. Don’t let yours to be next. Shade and a partial water change are probably better remedies. The algae is Mother Nature’s way of telling you there is excess nutrient in the water and algae is her solution. Water changes help to decrease the stuff in the water you can see (algae) as well as those things you can’t, like ammonia from fish waste and decomposing organic mat-ter. The fish don’t mind the algae, be patient it will go away.
Always be humble and kind

It’s nice to be able to get out and enjoy your pond in the evenings or early mornings. Lights allow you to enjoy your pond during periods of darkness and enhance the beauty of a wa-terfall or other water feature. We have a variety of LED options for you to choose from. Many are available in either white or colored. Some have remote controls that allow you change the color or pattern of colors from your patio or porch without having to even be near your feature. LED lights are so energy efficient you won’t need a lot of electricity to enjoy them.
